Our Head Sommelier Steven Gerdes brings a wealth of knowledge regarding local, national and international wines to The Woodhouse, pouring all his experience into our ever-evolving wine list.

No stranger to the hospitality game, Steven started out in the 1980’s as owner/operator of Lord Jim’s Hotel Fitzroy before moving into front of house management with some of the best in the business including Olympia Bortolotto (Bortolotto’s/Cafe Menis), Donlevy Fitzpatrick (Dog’s Bar), Bill Marchetti (The Latin and Tuscan Grill) and Annie Smithers (Annie’s Bistrot).

A man of many talents, Steve also worked as head chef in his own restaurant, The Macedon Wine Room, before moving to Bendigo.

Steve has been winning awards for his wine lists since his days at the Dogs Bar and is widely recognised among the hospitality industry for – not only his love and knowledge of wine – but his passion for good food and outstanding service.
